Dog rescued in Texas but lost near Midway is found safe

A dog rescued in Texas and bound for a home in Elkhorn, Wis. that disappeared after it slipped out of its harness near Midway Airport last week was found Tuesday night and is on its way to Wisconsin.

Madison, a Doberman rescued earlier this month, somehow got free of her harness near Midway Airport Friday afternoon, and had not been seen since Saturday night, said Lauren Kelliher, vice president of Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus, which helped coordinate the dog’s travel to Wisconsin.

“We are just so happy,” said Kelliher.

Larissa Gavin, who found Madison and arranged a flight in a private jet to Midway, said that the woman who found Madison Tuesday night went to a grocery store this morning and saw a flier about the missing dog, then called Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus to say she had Madison.

Gavin had been “hoping for a miracle” since the dog she rescued early this month disappeared.

Gavin had been driving around a neighborhood in Houston on Jan. 5 with the founder of a rescue group, stopping to offer food to dogs and talking to people about bringing their dogs in during the cold weather, when they happened upon three unleashed puppies, Gavin said in an email last week.
