Humans Use Sound Cues to Read Dog’s Emotions

Humans Use Sound Cues to Read Dog’s Emotions
Article from Discovery News:

Most dog owners can sense the difference between Fido’s yip of joy and howl of discontent. Now, scientists find people use the same general rules to recognize doggy emotions as they do for fellow humans.

By comparing how people perceive human and dog vocalizations, researchers found that people linked positive or negative emotions with the length of a vocalization, and the emotional intensity with a sound’s pitch.

Emotions reflect a person’s mental state, and the evolutionary roots of emotions go way back. Emotional vocalizations are quite similar across different species, and may carry the same information about an animal’s inner state as about a human’s. (Top 10 Things that Make Humans Special)

“We are curious how dogs communicate their inner state, and in what extent are humans able to understand this,” said study team member Tamás Faragó, who studies animal behavior at E…………………continues on Discovery News

Freak dog injury could motivate new Tanaka suitor
Article from New York Post:

What if there’s another dog in the fight for Masahiro Tanaka, and it belongs to Derek Holland?

Stick with us here: Holland, the Texas Rangers left-hander, suffered a left knee injury this week that will require surgery and keep him out until midseason.

Holland, who pitched to a 3.42 ERA last season in a team-leading 213 innings, said he went down while playing with his pet boxer Wrigley — he’s just asking for bad luck with that name — in one of those freak sports pratfalls.

“I was running around with the dog and took off up the stairs,” Holland told the Dallas Morning News. “He chased me and ran up under me and undercut me, and I slammed my head on the steps.

“It could have been worse. I could have cracked my head open. I was doing a typical guy thing, clowning around with the dog thing, and this happened.”

Tori Spelling Life-and-Death Dog Caper
Article from TMZ.com:

EXCLUSIVE

Tori Spelling
is in the middle of a bizarre dog dispute that could end with her pooch getting put to death … TMZ has learned.

Claudia — who has worked for Tori for years — tells TMZ she was Tori’s dog walker but in 2011 the animals got too big for the 90210 star’s digs and Tori asked Claudia to board the dogs at her home … for a price of $ 525 a month.

Claudia says she didn’t get paid this month and went ballistic.  She tried getting in touch with Tori, Dean and their accountant, with no success.   Claudia then spoke with a TMZ producer and she said if she didn’t get her money by Monday she would take the dog to the shelter where it will more than likely be euthanized.

We then called Tori’s people … and they were completely in the dark.  Word got back to Tori and she went crazy and texted the woman and asked what the hell was going on.  Tori said she had no idea Claudia had not been paid and now she wants here dog back … STAT.

We then spoke to Claudia who said she would not answer Tori’s text and would not give the dog back.

A Hawthorne man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly purposefully running over and killing a pet Chihuahua belonging to his estranged wife and children in an incident police said was caught on surveillance video.

Michael David Parker, 45, was arrested Jan. 3, a day after police found the remains of a dog inside a bag in an alley, according to a news release issued Monday by the Hawthorne Police Department.

Police and animal control officers had responded to an alley near El Segundo Boulevard and Doty Avenue after a local resident found dog that had been dead for several days and placed it inside a bag.

Investigators discovered surveillance video that, according to police, shows Parker driving into the alley, opening his trunk and closing it, then getting back into the car.

Moments later, a dog — described by police as a 5 1/2-year-old Chihuahua named “Cow Cow” — runs from the side of the car and in front of it, the video shows.

Coyote grabs pet dog in Glenview
Article from Chicago Tribune:

With a recent – and fatal – attack of a small Yorkshire terrier in a backyard of the Swainwood subdivision in Glenview, officials there are warning residents to be alert for hungry, roaming coyotes.

As part of a regular morning routine, the small dog was recently let out at about 6:30 a.m., when, unbeknownst to the dog’s owner, a coyote was also in the yard. The coyote grabbed the dog and ran off, authorities said.

“The dog owner let the dog out like anybody else would, and there just happened to be a coyote nearby and when they realized what was happening, the coyote had already snatched the dog and ran away,” said Glenview Police Sgt. Patrick Schuster.

Authorities did not identify the dog’s owners.

Winter is the time of year when food is scarce and coyotes are more aggressive, according to Glenview Animal Control Officer Judi Roseman.

Schuster said there were two dogs in the yard at the time, but the owner’s second dog was unharmed.

He said the home is in a heavily treed area just blocks away from the train tracks. Schuster said he suspects coyotes may commonly walk along the tracks.

The neighborhood is bordered on the east by Lehigh Avenue, to the south by Glenview Road, to the west is Shermer Road, and to the north by East Lake Avenue.

To keep pets safe from coyotes, authorities recommend…………………continues on Chicago Tribune

Police: 1 dead, 2 injured from dog attack in southeast Houston
Article from Houston Chronicle:

Two pit bulls mauled a homeless woman to death and injured two men in southeast Houston early Sunday, police said.

The victims were attacked around 2 a.m. on Glen Prairie near Leonora by female pit bulls. One of the dogs, estimated to be 1-year-old and 30 pounds, was caught immediately after the attack, said Chris Glaser, the City of Houston Animal Control manager.

Police did not release the name of the woman killed, but neighbors described her as a petite woman in her 40s who was a regular in the neighborhood. She was seen panhandling around dusk before the attack.

“She looked fine at that time,” said Dewayne London, 45, who lives in the area.

The Dog Paddle Is Just an Underwater Jog
Article from Discovery News:

Pooches doing the ‘dog paddle‘ are basically just trotting underwater, a new study concludes.

It’s a technique that armadillos, turtles and even humans can use to stay afloat and move in water.

For the research, presented at the 2014 Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology meeting held in Austin, biologist Frank Fish and colleagues started out with eight dogs representing six breeds. They ranged from Yorkshire terriers to the Newfoundland.

Scientists discover dogs’ preferred bathroom position

Scientists discover dogs’ preferred bathroom position
Article from Fox News:

Talk about animal magnetism!

Scientists discovered that dogs across a variety of breeds align their body axis with the Earth’s magnetic field (MF) when relieving themselves.

70 dogs out of 37 different breeds — beagles and dachshunds and Yorkshire terriers, oh my! — were observed going number two 1,893 times and number one 5,582 times over the course of a two-year period. And they preferred to excrete when their body was aligned along the north-south axis under calm MF conditions, according to a new report in the journal Frontiers in Zoology.

‘Dogs not only prefer N-S direction, but at the same time they also avoid E-W direction.’

– Vlastimil Hart, a researcher with the Czech University of Life Sciences

This behavior did not occur under unstable conditions, according to the paper — and why it happens at all is a mystery, too.

“It is still enigmatic why the dogs do align at all, whether they do it ‘consciously’ … or whether its reception is controlled on the vegetative level (they ‘feel better/more comfortable or worse/less comfortable’ in a certain direction),” wrote researchers from the Department of Game Management and Wildlife Biology at the Czech University of Life Sciences in the Czech Republic and the zoology department at the…………………continues on Fox News

Dogs’ pot poisoning soars as pets dig through trash, stash

Dogs’ pot poisoning soars as pets dig through trash, stash
Article from San Francisco Chronicle:

San Francisco veterinarian Jill Chase had just finished hosting a birthday party for her son 10 years ago when her dog went limp. After investigating what might have caused the problem, she discovered the culprit: cannabis-infused butter that a neighbor had dumped in the garbage down the street. Her dog, a Tibetan terrier who was a habitual trash surfer, had eaten a large dose.

“He was completely ODd in a coma for three days, on my bathroom floor with an IV,” said Chase, whose dog eventually recovered.

Since Chase’s experience, cases of marijuana poisoning in dogs have increased, particularly in states like California where medical marijuana is legal. As one veterinarian put it, our dogs are “munching out.” Dogs are known to be indiscriminate eaters, going after paper, trash, random objects on the street and, now, their best friend’s cannabis.

The Pet Poison Hotline, which takes calls from around the country and Canada, noted a 200 percent increase in reported incidents of poisoning in the past five years. Dr. San Francisco Chronicle
