Hundreds of people protested in front of the Salt Lake City Police Department Saturday to demand justice for the victim in a controversial police shooting — a 110-pound dog named “Geist.”

The gray Weimaraner was loose in a fenced-in backyard June 18 when he was shot dead by a police officer who was searching for a missing boy. Police said the dog was shot after he approached the officer in an “aggressive manner.” The boy was later found sleeping in his home.

The protest included many dog owners, who brought their pets. The protesters held signs that read: “Shoo not Shoot,” “Man’s best friend should not be gunned down,” and “My pets are my family.”

“I believe this officer made a terrible judgment call.”

“It’s overwhelming, the support of the community,” Geist’s owner, Sean Kendall, said at the protest, according to Fox News

Dog coughs up lost wedding ring
Article from KHON2:

(WAOW/CNN) — A Wisconsin woman found her wedding ring that she lost five years ago and it turned up in the most unusual way.

First, meet Tucker. He’s your typical mutt. He likes playing with his frisbee and rolling on the grass on a hot summer day.

You wouldn’t think he’s 10 years old by the way he acts.

Like every pup. he likes getting into trouble. He’s known in the family to be the food burglar. It’s because of that nickname that a secret hiding in his belly would be revealed.

Two weeks ago, Tucker’s owner Lois Matykowski and her granddaughter were eating Popsicles outside.

“After I turn around and look at my granddaughter,” she said, “the Popsicle is gone and there’s Tucker smacking his jaws.”

The “food burglar” had struck again, swallowing the Popsicle whole.

But the snatched food soon came back up, “stick and all, everything came out.”

Two days later, Tucker started vomiting again, only this time it wasn’t a Popsicle stick.

“And I look in the paper towel and here is my wedding ring,” Matykowski said. “I kid you not. My wedding ring was in Tucker’s puke.”

About five years ago, Matykowski said her ring went missing. She searched the house high and low with no luck.

“I was devastated. How do you replace something like that, not only the value of the ring but just the emotional ties, too.”<…………………continues on KHON2

Hawaii Woman Adopts Shelter Dog for $ 85, Posts it on Craigslist for $ 200 an …
Article from ABC News:

A Jack Russell terrier that was adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Center appeared in a for sale ad on Craigslist only one hour after the adoption, an act that Internet posters doggedly flagged, leading to a return of the animal to the shelter.

Sally Mae, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier, was adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society after the organization made a video of her and posted it on YouTube. The organization posted a picture of the pooch and her new owner on its official Facebook page.

“We got notices from our fans on Facebook only an hour or two after the adoption, saying that a woman has posted a Craigslist ad, wearing the same cloth as the woman in our Facebook post,” Jacque Vaughn, community relations director at the Hawaiian Humane Society told ABC News.

The Craigslist ad, titled “Jack Russell,” claimed that the dog was five years old, while in fact, Sally Mae is 10. The dog had to be sold because “my boyfriend& I is [sic] too caught up with work since we have 2 jobs each and she needs a family that’ll give her that attention. Please.”

The time stamp of the ad proved that it was posted only an hour or two after the adoption, according to Vaughn.

Utah man demands police officer be fired for fatally shooting dog in fenced …
Article from New York Daily News:

Facebook Geist, pictured, lived in the back yard, but was never known to be aggressive, despite a Salt Lake City police officer’s claim, Sean Kendall says.

A devastated Salt Lake City man wants the police officer who shot his dog dead fired from the force.

Sean Kendall’s 2-year-old Weimaraner, Geist, was killed last week after officers entered the man’s backyard during the search for a missing nonverbal 3-year-old boy.

The 110-pound pooch approached the unidentified officer “in an aggressive manner” and “the officer, in turn, shot the dog,” police said in a statement after the shooting June 18.

The missing boy was found at his home asleep about 30 minutes later.

“The department regrets the unfortunate outcome of this incident,” the statement read.

20 dogs die in Arizona heat after air conditioning kicks out on senator’s son

20 dogs die in Arizona heat after air conditioning kicks out on senator’s son
Article from CNN:

  • Sheriff’s deputies found the dead dogs piled up in a shed at a kennel
  • A senator’s son and his wife were watching the animals when they died
  • The kennel owners were out of town; they say it was an accident
  • The sheriff casts doubt on their story, so does a veterinarian

(CNN) — Heat. There’s been plenty of it to go around in Arizona these first days of summer — literally and politically — after the air conditioning went out at a dog kennel.

Sheriff’s deputies found 20 dead dogs piled up in a shed on Friday at Green Acres Dog Boarding Facility in Gilbert. The public shock over their deaths led a U.S. senator to issue a public statement on Monday.

As fate would have it, Republican Sen. Jeff Flake’s son, Austin, was minding the kennel, when the dogs died.

Craigslist dog ad sparks public outrage, disappointment
Article from KHON2:

The Hawaiian Humane Society said it’s disappointed by a Craiglist ad to sell an adopted dog.

The society posted a photo on its Facebook page after Sally Mae, a 10-year-old Jack Russell, was adopted on Sunday. One hour later, an ad was posted on Craigslist offering to sell the dog for more than double what was paid in adoption fees.

The ad claimed the owner and her boyfriend were busy working two jobs and unable to take care of the dog. The ad asked for a $ 200 “rehoming” fee or best offer.

“It’s really disappointing to think that animals are really seen as a commodity versus your loving pet that’s part of your family so that’s really hard for us,” said Christina Kam, Hawaiian Humane Society’s communications and event coordinator.

Kam said she’s been trying to contact the person who adopted Sally Mae to find out if she is actually trying to sell the dog for a profit or just isn’t able to take care of her.

Kam said there is nothing the humane society can do to stop her at this point. “We’re just really imploring her to come and return Sally to us so we can just get here to a new home. She does have a medical condition,” she said.

The ad is already sparking public outrage on Craigslist and social media.

Humane officials say the act isn’t illegal. Adopters sign a contract with the Humane Society, but there’s nothing in there…………………continues on KHON2

Canine controversy: Chinese festival serves up dog meat – CNN
Article from Canine controversy: Chinese festival serves up dog meat – CNN:

  • Yulin’s annual dog meat festival draws controversy
  • Animal rights advocates want people to stop eating dog meat
  • Defenders say eating dog meat is like eating beef

Yulin, China (CNN) — A mob of people have surrounded a group of animal rights activists protesting in the busiest open market in town. It’s the eve of Yulin’s annual dog meat festival, a tradition that dates back generations to celebrate the summer solstice.

Arguments ensue among those living in the city and the people who condemn the tradition. “Don’t you eat beef? If you stop eating beef, then we’ll stop eating dog meat,” yells one man frustrated with the intense media scrutiny in the Dong Kou open market, where an array of birds, snakes, cats and livestock are sold as daily fresh fare.

Dozens of journalists, filmmakers and photographers have come to the city in China’s southeast Guangxi province to document an event that lies at the…………………continues on Canine controversy: Chinese festival serves up dog meat – CNN

Embracing the ugly at the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

Embracing the ugly at the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest
Article from azcentral.com:

The good, the bad and the ugly were on display at the 26th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif., on Friday.

But mostly, it was just ugly.

The dogs came from all walks of life: puppy mills, abusive homes, shelters and the streets. You could retrace each pup’s life story through the scars, disfigurations and natural deformities.

All of their stories share a common theme: Each was adopted by a loving family that wanted to showcase their beauty (mostly inner beauty) at the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.

Zoomer, who placed second, is from Tucson and was mere hours away from the euthanasia table when he was saved by Saving Animals From Euthanasia and taken into foster care by Linda Elmquist. He was then adopted by Jon Adler.

“If it had not been for SAFE, he wouldn’t have a heartbeat,” Adler said. “But for as rough of a life as he has had, he bounced back pretty good.”

Zoomer, a 5-year-old Chinese crested, is now living the high life with prizes including new bones, tennis balls, toys, dog food and a red ribbon to commemorate his showing.

“I cried when they crowned him, because he was my baby and he was going to be put down within an hour, and now he’s an international star,” Elmquist said.

She had her own pup, Josie, in the contest.

As for the world’s ugliest dog, the gran…………………continues on azcentral.com
