There’s a $ 5,000 reward for a little dog that was allegedly snatched from outside a Beverly Hills boutique yesterday by a pregnant thief, and George Lopez, Hillary Duff and newlywed Lance Bass are on the case.

This is the sort of story that could only happen in sun-bleached Los Angeles. Charlie, an adorable white Maltese, is well-known to his Beverly Hills neighbors, ABC reports. His human, Julia Cohen, has owned Switch Boutique at 238 S. Beverly Drive with her sister for the last nine years. Charlie often hangs around outside, sipping from his water bowl and greeting his human and dog friends. He never strays far, wears a red collar and is microchipped, according to KTLA.

A surveillance video from yesterday shows a woman in a yellow top and young girl follow Charlie around a corner, then emerge with the woman…………………continues on LAist

Top 5 rarest breeds at Rose City Classic dog show (photos)

Top 5 rarest breeds at Rose City Classic dog show (photos)
Article from OregonLive.com:

Of the 3,000 dogs featured at the Rose City Classic dog show, about 1/3 of the 175 breeds represented are considered rare, according to Patti Strand, organizer of the event.

Several of the rare breeds featured at the show are considered among breeders to be endangered, according to Strand. Breeds that lose their historic role are especially vulnerable, she said. “The fate of these breeds is in the hands of a small number of very dedicated breeders.”

These are the top five most rare breeds represented at the show, according to Strand:

1. Skye Terrier. Rush, the Skye Terrier who came to compete at the show, was automatically named best in his breed because, as its sole representative, he had no other competition. The breed originated off the west coast of Scotland, according to the American Kennel Club website. Queen Victoria had a thing for the breed, according to the site, which made them a popular pet in the 19th century.

2. Sussex Spaniel. There were only…………………continues on OregonLive.com

Dog saves another dog drowning in icy waters in Iowa
Article from KABC-TV:

ANDALUSIA, Iowa (KABC) —

Quick thinking and fast feet saved the life of a dog that nearly drowned after falling through thin ice in Iowa. But it wasn’t just humans responsible for rescuing the ailing pup, it was another dog.

“It was wore out. He didn’t have much longer,” said Matt Stark, who was on the rescue boat in Andalusia.

The black Labrador had fallen through the ice and into a water treatment plant. His fellow canine started barking to get someone’s attention.

Joe Dungan had just returned from lunch.

“The one black dog was running around and tried to get my attention. I think he was trying to tell me he was saving his friend. I looked over in this hole over here and the other dog was in the water trying to get out,” said Dungan, who called 911.

Rescuers pulled the struggling dog to safety and wrapped it in wool. Both dogs wore collars, but did not have tags, animal control officials said.

“Its a good thing that we got to him when we did,” said Byron Reynolds with animal control.

“Lucky dog. Maybe that’s his name,” Reynolds added.

Dog Abandoned at Scotland Train Station with Suitcase | The Weather Channel

Dog Abandoned at Scotland Train Station with Suitcase | The Weather Channel
Article from The Weather Channel:

Earlier this month, United Airlines suffered a public relations nightmare when a photo of a dog left on a rainy tarmac exploded onto Twitter. Now, a new photo has surfaced, leaving animal lovers furious.

The dog may look dry and safe, yet investigators say it was found abandoned at Ayr railway station in Scotland. The male shar-pei crossbreed was stranded with a suitcase filled with his belongings, according to a Scottish SPCA press release. The suitcase contained a bowl, food, a toy and a pillow.

Investigators were able to identify the dog using a microchip, “The dog is microchipped, and we were able to find out his name is Kai,” SPCA inspector Stewart Taylor reported.

How to keep dogs healthy and happy during extreme cold and snow
Article from Minnesota Public Radio News:

This week’s cold weather isn’t just challenging for people. Dogs accustomed to blowing off steam in the backyard are now penned up inside — driving their owners bonkers.

We talked to some dog experts around the state, who gave us their best advice on how to keep dogs happy and healthy during this rough weather.

To persuade reluctant dogs to go outside at all, Maureen Haggerty, owner of The Canine Coach in Minneapolis, recommends making the yard slightly more comfortable for dogs to find a place that is sheltered from the wind. An area between a shrub and a house can be perfect for smaller dogs.

“Most dog owners, if they do have a yard, they do shovel a path, because some dogs don’t like to squat and then feel the snow,” Haggerty said.

For those who still want to take their dogs along for outdoor activities in the winter, dog experts recommend checking with your veterinarian to see if your dog can handle extended treks in cold weather.

Different breeds will deal differently with the cold. A husky is made for cold weather, although even a husky can get frostbite or otherwise injured when temperatures drop very low. But short-haired dogs, like Haggerty’s Dobermans, have mor…………………continues on Minnesota Public Radio News
